My family doesn’t talk about important personal things. Things like love, pain and change are framed by blurry lines between the unspoken and the unspeakable. From a young age body language became my most important language. It made me “visual.” That’s how and why I photograph.

 

I make photos of the things I struggle to say, things I need more context for in the hopes not to be misunderstood and to understand others. I create image evidence in hopes to change this family tradition with my own daughters, and the images help me find words I can now use with them.

 

I’m guided by memory, emotion and connection. The underlays of behavior speak loudly to me. I’m attracted to solitude and individuality and also ache for belonging. I photograph people and all things personal, aiming to build myself and others up to become strong for life.

 

I’m a Mexican-Canadian lens-based artist living and working in Canada since 2013, currently based in the Annapolis Valley, Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia). Using the digital medium, I use a loose and expanded documentary approach. I’m the mom carrying her big camera everywhere instead of a purse.
