Somewhere in the universe, way beyond 'the nocturnal dome'1, there was once a curious star.

She was made of 'tremulous crystal'2, and she was cold as ice.

And in her "diamond body"3, she waited patiently to be found
'in the celestial frozen river
.

She hoped so, so hard to be seen
that a sweet passer reached far to hold her.

And 'in an act of extraordinary love'4,
opened a flashing doorway.

The star’s light scattered as she crossed,
and for the first time, she learned
how cold feels to earthly beings.

But she also felt the warmth of play and kindness,
as she knew she was for the first time truly seen.

For as long as winter days would last,
they both shared and giggled,
but as the night’s dark cover approached,
she knew she had to leave her.

The star ran back to the celestial frozen river
and grabbed her spark,
now shining even bigger.

Insoluble in the water,
her glow lingered forever.

And her friend kept looking up,
thinking of her star—
forbidden.
